Plum picking at Avondale

I know I say this every time I write about them, but I do love Slow Food Mother City. It’s only been going for a year, and in that time, the small but fun, funky and committed people that started it have organised some wonderful events. I was at a gathering a few weeks ago where they announced some of the events that are in the planning for 2011, and they look wonderful.

Anyway, the last event for this year was a day out at Avondale wine farm. Jonathan Grieve of Avondale has developed his own “bio-logic” principles of farming, using sustainable and environmentally friendly ways of farming free of pesticides and herbicides. Alongside the extensive vineyards, Avondale is home to an orchard of organic plums, and we spent part of the morning picking gorgeous jewellike organic plums from the trees.
